Troops of the Nigerian Army have intensified operations in the South-East, recording significant gains against suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Enugu State.

The Army disclosed that the offensive, conducted under Operation Eastern Sanity with support from the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, led to the successful dislodgement of the group from key strongholds in Ajali Forest, located in Ezeagu Local Government Area.

According to military sources, the operation carried out on April 14, 2026, forced the insurgents into a disorganised retreat, during which they abandoned critical equipment, including an anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The device was subsequently secured and neutralised by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, preventing potential casualties.

The Army said troops have now established control over the area, continuing clearance operations aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure. Several hideouts were reportedly destroyed using heavy equipment, leaving the fleeing elements without cover or operational base.

In a related development, troops of the 82 Division Garrison, acting on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS), intercepted suspected ransom proceeds linked to a kidnapping syndicate in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area.

The operation led to the arrest of a suspected kidnapper and the recovery of a pump-action rifle alongside ₦2 million, believed to be ransom money, from the suspect’s residence.

Military authorities confirmed that the suspect and recovered items have been handed over for further investigation, with efforts ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network.

The Army noted that the latest operations have further weakened the operational and financial capacity of IPOB/ESN elements, stressing that sustained pressure has continued to degrade their ability to regroup or launch attacks.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Army assured residents of the South-East of continued efforts to eliminate criminal elements and restore lasting peace, while urging the public to support security agencies with credible information.
