The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships as part of efforts to enhance national security and operational effectiveness.

Lt. Gen. Shaibu made this known while receiving a delegation from King’s College London, led by Professor Randolph Charles Kent, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

He described the 6-year collaboration between the Nigerian Army and King’s College London as a critical driver of capacity building, noting that the partnership has significantly contributed to leadership development, intellectual growth, and operational efficiency within the force.

According to him, the collaboration, facilitated through the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), has expanded access to world-class military education while supporting the Army’s transformation into a more professional, adaptive, and combat-ready institution.

The COAS stressed that evolving security challenges across the globe demand proactive strategies rooted in collaboration, innovation, and continuous knowledge-sharing, adding that such partnerships are essential in strengthening the Army’s ability to operate effectively within a joint and multi-agency security framework.

Highlighting the role of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Lt. Gen. Shaibu noted that the institution serves as a strategic think tank, generating policy-driven solutions and promoting synergy among security stakeholders to tackle Nigeria’s complex threat environment.

He further drew attention to emerging security concerns, particularly the impact of the digital information space on national stability, warning that information warfare and malign influence operations pose growing risks, calling for deeper academic collaboration to develop research-based responses to these challenges.

In his remarks, Professor Kent commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining the partnership, stating that the Yale-NARC African Leadership Centre programme continues to thrive on shared knowledge and expertise, noting that such collaborations remain vital in addressing global uncertainties, fostering innovation, and enhancing collective capacity to respond to contemporary security threats.

The engagement underscores the Nigerian Army’s broader commitment to leveraging international cooperation and institutional partnerships in strengthening national security and addressing evolving threats in an increasingly complex global environment.
