The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned a series of petitions filed by members of the Accord Party against Hon. Wole Oke, the Director-General of the Bola Oyebamiji Campaign Committee. The petitions, addressed to both the Assistant Inspector-General of Police and the American Ambassador to Nigeria, allege that the lawmaker stoked violence and made inflammatory remarks in a viral video ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC described the allegations as “baseless, frivolous, and a misuse of forum.” The party claimed the petitions are a result of political frustration and an attempt by an Accord Party member to gain attention. Olabisi defended Hon. Oke, describing him as an “apostle of the rule of law” and a “worthy ambassador of the nation” whose conduct in public office has been exemplary.
The APC statement urged the petitioner to desist from “destroying his political career” by engaging in what they termed an “exhibition of idiocy.” The party argued that the petition to the American Embassy over a “harmless political statement” would not yield any results. They suggested that the Accord Party should focus on making its “relatively unknown” governorship candidate popular rather than attacking the “towering political popularity” of the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
Conversely, the Accord Party has stood by its petitions, describing the remarks in the viral video as “menacing, inflammatory, and capable of inciting violence.” In the petition filed by ASA Attorneys on behalf of the state chairman, Pastor Victor Akande, the party alleged that the statement is a direct threat to the lives, safety, and civil liberties of citizens in Osun State, particularly those in the opposition.
The Accord Party expressed concern that such rhetoric could heighten political tension and undermine the democratic rights of citizens to associate freely. They have called on the Police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the video and invite the lawmaker for questioning. Additionally, the party requested an increased security presence across the state to ensure that political actors and residents can participate in the democratic process without fear of harassment.
