The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defeated former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, at his polling unit in Saturday’s governorship election, signalling a potential shift in political loyalty within his stronghold.
The result, announced at Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, Anaocha Local Government Area, showed APC’s Nicholas Ukachukwu securing 73 votes, followed by Labour Party’s George Moghalu with 57, while APGA trailed with 38 votes.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the results around 3 p.m. after the collation exercise. The development has triggered reactions across political circles, given Obi’s long-standing influence in Anambra politics.
During the 2023 presidential election, Obi, under the Labour Party, won over 95 percent of votes in Anambra State, including a clean sweep across nearly all polling units. His loss in his hometown polling unit has now raised fresh questions about shifting voter dynamics and the growing presence of opposition parties in the state.
In a similar development, results from other parts of the state indicate tight competition among major political parties as collation continues.
