A federal high court in Kaduna has adjourned the bail hearing for the former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, to March 31 following his arraignment on alleged corruption charges.
Speaking on the nature of the case, the defense counsel explained that the charges leveled against the former governor primarily center around the deposit of funds into a domiciliary account and the monetization of his earnings.
The counsel further noted that out of a 10-count charge brought forward, a co-defendant identified as Joel was joined on only one count.
During the court proceedings, the defense team respectfully objected to the arraignment moving forward, citing pending applications before the court.
However, the presiding judge exercised his discretion to proceed with the arraignment. Following the formal reading of the charges, the judge adjourned the matter to March 31 to allow for the hearing of the bail application, which the defense noted was filed on the same day as the arraignment.
When asked about rumors of additional charges at the State High Court, the defense counsel stated they had not yet been served and could not comment until formally notified.
Following the adjournment, political allies and supporters gathered in solidarity. The lawmaker representing Kaduna North addressed the press, expressing unwavering support for El-Rufai, whom he described as the father of modern Kaduna.
The representative, flanked by former commissioners and a former chief of staff, emphasized their collective belief in the judicial process and the rule of law.
He also took the opportunity to assure Nigerians and well-wishers that the former governor is in good health and high spirits, eagerly looking forward to regaining his freedom and expressing his deep appreciation for the outpouring of love and prayers from his supporters.
