Akwa Ibom unveils 10-year plan to deliver quality power to all households by 2034

20 Sept 2025

Akwa Ibom State Government has launched a 10-year electricity reform plan aimed at providing reliable power to all households by 2034 and creating a blueprint for electricity reforms across Nigeria.

Governor Umo Eno announced the plan on Friday at the conclusion of a two-day Electricity Summit held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

In a statement obtained from the government house press unit on Saturday, the Governor highlighted the essence of collaboration.

He emphasised that the push to achieve electricity for all can only come through partnership with relevant agencies.

Eno said: “We have listened. We have learned. And we will act. But let me stress this: success will not come from government alone. It will come from partnerships with the private sector, with our federal counterparts, with development finance institutions, with investors and licensees, and with you, the people of Akwa Ibom.”

He emphasised that the initiative aims to eliminate electricity as a barrier to growth, ensuring that industries flourish, businesses thrive, and homes are powered.

“By 2034, God willing, every household in Akwa Ibom will have quality electricity service. And that we will build a model for electricity reform in Nigeria,” the Governor added.

As part of the reforms, the state will establish the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulation Commission (AKSERC) to oversee fair tariffs, transparent licensing, and independent monitoring, while the Akwa Ibom State Electrification Agency (AISEA) will expand electricity access to underserved communities.

Eno said the boards of these agencies would be constituted within one month.

The Governor also revealed plans to rehabilitate and commercialise Ibom Power Company, establish the Akwa Ibom Electricity Distribution Company, upgrade the state distribution network, and launch the Akwa Ibom Electricity Market with majority state ownership.

“These are not distant promises they are immediate, measurable, and achievable at various times within the next 24 months or even less,”

Eno said, adding that at least 20% of future power supply will come from renewable sources.

Earlier in the summit, Deputy Governor Senator Eyakenyi and Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, presented the roadmap to the Governor for consideration.

The plan aligns with the National Integrated Electricity Policy ratified by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025, which aims to unlock $122.2 billion in investments in Nigeria’s power sector between 2024 and 2045.

The policy also integrates diverse energy sources including hydrogen, solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, and bioenergy, while boosting transmission capacity and governance across the sector.

Governor Eno urged technically qualified Akwa Ibomites to apply for employment through the state’s ARISE Employment Portal.
