Air Peace has credited the United Kingdom government’s support for its approval to operate scheduled flights from Nigeria into London Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The airline’s Chairman, Dr. Allen Onyema, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos. He described the milestone as historic, noting that no Nigerian carrier had gained similar access in the past seven years.
Onyema praised the UK for its fairness and openness, stressing that the breakthrough reflects both the airline’s resilience and the backing it received from British authorities.
He singled out the British Deputy High Commissioner to Lagos, Jonny Baxter, calling him “a diplomat par excellence.” According to him, Baxter’s commitment ensured Air Peace received the necessary approvals to begin operations in the UK.
“Jonny Baxter gave us every support needed to commence our UK flights. Thanks to his efforts and the open-mindedness of UK authorities, we can proudly say that Air Peace and the UK share mutual respect,” Onyema said.
He revealed that the UK government’s invitation for Air Peace to commence Heathrow operations and Heathrow Airport’s plan to host a welcome party came as a pleasant surprise.
“This shows how warmly they have embraced us. We remain profoundly grateful to the UK government, Civil Aviation Authorities, and the people of the UK for their remarkable hospitality,” he added.
Explaining the airline’s choice to begin flights from Abuja to Heathrow and Gatwick, Onyema said the move would ease travel for passengers from Northern Nigeria. He encouraged Abuja-based travelers to patronize Air Peace for direct access to London.
He also urged Nigerian public officials and citizens to demonstrate patriotism by supporting Air Peace and other Nigerian carriers on international routes.
“Our airlines offer competitive fares and seamless service. Choosing them strengthens the Nigerian economy and projects our national pride,” Onyema concluded.
