The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has officially clarified the reasons behind the discontinuation of criminal charges against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc.
In a statement issued by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity at the AGF’s office, the decision to enter a nolle prosequi in the case reflects a commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
The AGF explained that after a thorough review, it was determined that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe had no direct connection to the alleged fraudulent activity.
Specifically, she was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of the bank at the time the account in question was opened.
“This decision followed a careful review of the case which did not connect Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe to the charge,” the statement read.
“The Attorney General’s decision is guided by the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.”
The statement emphasized that this legal action does not absolve Fidelity Bank as a corporate entity from the ongoing proceedings. The broader case remains active before the court.
While acknowledging public interest in the matter, the AGF’s office urged Nigerians to respect the integrity of the legal process and refrain from speculation.
“The AGF will ensure that the best interest of justice is served at all times and that all those found wanting, at any time, face the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent to others,” Ogundele concluded.
The legal proceedings concerning the broader allegations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
