The Adamawa State Government has approved N5 billion for the upgrade of 12 major livestock and grain markets as part of efforts to boost agriculture, improve food security, and expand the state’s export capacity.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by his deputy, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, announced the approval during the commissioning of the newly upgraded market in Ngurore, Yola South Local Government Area. The intervention spans five cattle markets and seven grain markets across the 21 local government areas.
According to the governor, the project is under the Adamawa Agribusiness Support Programme (ADAS-P), a public-private partnership aimed at modernising agriculture, attracting private sector investments, and increasing farmers’ incomes.
“The upgraded markets are expected to enhance the agricultural value chain, stimulate local economies, and create jobs,” Fintiri said. “We have also established a State Market Management Company to work with local governments and stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and proper management of these markets.”
The governor emphasised that improvements include better infrastructure, security enhancements, drainage construction, and other upgrades to create a more conducive business environment.
Community members and traders were urged to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper maintenance. The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Alhaji Tijjani Maksha, and the Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. David Jatau, echoed the governor’s call for responsible use of the facilities.
Chairman of the Livestock Sellers Association, Mr. Gidado Walga, applauded the initiative and pledged support, urging citizens to rally behind the administration to enable continued development across the state.
