Nigerian politics is often a mix of people from different professional backgrounds. However, some leaders have never worked in the private sector. Their entire careers were built on public service, academia, or the military.
Here are five Nigerian politicians who never worked in private practice before assuming political power.
1. Olusegun Obasanjo
Olusegun Obasanjo’s career was entirely dedicated to public service. He joined the Nigerian Army and rose to the rank of general, serving as Head of State from 1976 to 1979. He returned as a civilian president in 1999 and served until 2007. His journey to the top was built purely on military and state service, with no experience in the private business world.
2. Goodluck Jonathan
Before entering politics, Goodluck Jonathan worked as an education inspector and a university lecturer. He then moved into roles within public service, including an assistant director at the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission. His rise from Deputy Governor to President was achieved entirely through his dedication to public service and academia.
3. Ahmad Lawan
A former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan’s career began in the classroom. He was a university lecturer with a doctorate in Geography. He transitioned from academia directly into politics when he was elected to the National Assembly in 1999. His journey shows a path to leadership rooted in public education and legislative service.
4. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal
Although he holds a law degree, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal never entered private legal practice. After his youth service, he went directly into politics, serving as a member of the House of Representatives and later as its Speaker before becoming the Governor of Sokoto State. His career has always been tied to public and political life.
5. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje
Abdullahi Ganduje’s career has been firmly in public administration and politics. He began as an administrative officer in the civil service and also taught at a college. His path to power as a two-term Governor of Kano State was built entirely on a foundation of public and political service.
