As tributes continue to pour in following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, many Nigerians are reflecting on his legacy including the national honours he conferred on prominent celebrities during his time in office.

From Nollywood icons to Afrobeats giants, here are six influential entertainers who received prestigious national awards from the late president:

1. Mo Abudu – Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)
Media mogul and EbonyLife Films CEO, Mosunmola Abudu (Mo Abudu), was conferred with the OON in recognition of her global impact in storytelling and entertainment. Sharing the honour on social media, she expressed deep gratitude:
“I’ve received awards worldwide, but to be honoured by my country is truly humbling.”

2. Emeka Rollas – Member of the Order of the Niger (MON)
Nollywood veteran and filmmaker Emeka Rollas also received the MON from Buhari’s administration. He took to Instagram to express his appreciation, thanking God for the recognition.

3. Burna Boy – Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR)
Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy was honoured with the MFR following his 2020 Grammy win. His father, Samuel Ogulu, received the award on his behalf. Buhari praised the singer’s global influence and contribution to Nigeria’s music industry.

4. Teni – Member of the Order of the Niger (MON)
Afropop sensation Teniola Apata (Teni) also received the MON award. However, her award moment sparked controversy online after she quickly walked off stage, leading to debates over whether she had “snubbed” the president. Fans were divided, but the honour stood.

5. 2Baba – Member of the Order of the Niger (MON)
Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, aka 2Baba, was one of the few entertainers recognised with a MON title. The singer celebrated the award online, calling it a proud moment in his career.

6. KWAM 1 – Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)
Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, aka KWAM 1, was physically present to receive his OON medal from President Buhari. Following the ex-leader’s death, KWAM 1 performed a moving dirge in his honour, stirring emotional tributes from fans.

A legacy remembered
While opinions on Buhari’s administration remain divided, his effort to celebrate excellence in arts and entertainment left a mark. As the nation mourns his passing, these honours stand as reminders of the lives and legacies he touched even in pop culture.
