2027: Why it does not matter if Tinubu has 36 governors – Obi

11 Jun 2026

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has said it does not matter if President Bola Tinubu has all 36 state governors by his side.

Speaking during a recent interview in Washington, D.C., Obi noted that he did not have a single governor on his side during the 2023 presidential election, yet he still won in 12 states.

He made these remarks while discussing the upcoming 2027 general elections.

“For the 2027 election, it doesn’t matter if all 36 governors are with President Tinubu. I didn’t have a single governor in the last election, yet I won 12 states, even after they stole two states from me.”

“By treating Abuja as a state, we effectively have 37 states, because that is what the judgment of the Supreme Court showed.”

“Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso won one state, which was Kano. The APC, PDP, and Labour Party won 12 states each. Even though I lost two states to rigging, I still would have secured 12 states,” he said.
