…Says opposition creating ‘political entertainment’ for Nigerians to enjoy
As Nigeria’s political landscape heats up in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, signs of potential opposition unity have sparked reactions from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party’s spokesperson in the Senate, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has dismissed recent coalition talks among opposition figures as mere “political entertainment,” describing them as the actions of “content creators” who are simply playing to the crowd.
Speaking to reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, the Senate Committee Chairman on Media and Public Affairs ridiculed attempts by prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to form a united front against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
According to Adaramodu, the APC is not in the least concerned by the noise surrounding a possible merger.
“Our party, APC, is not worried. What do you expect politicians to do? They are here to play politics. So, if they’re playing politics, should they be clapping for the APC? Of course not,” he stated pointedly.
In a tone laced with irony, Adaramodu described the opposition’s efforts as a shallow performance.
“They have to attack either with lies, propaganda, or falsehoods. They are coming together to climb a mountain they can’t even reach the base of,” he remarked.
Adaramodu continued, asserting that the opposition, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), lack the structure and unity required to challenge the APC seriously.
“Go and look at the weight of those involved in this coalition and their platforms. Those in the PDP, we don’t even know which faction they belong to. The Labour Party? We know it’s just a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for an election; it’s not organic,” he said.
He sarcastically labelled the opposition’s efforts as a sideshow, adding, “They are creating content, and we should just enjoy it. At this point, it’s political entertainment for us to laugh at.”
Adaramodu also took the opportunity to praise President Tinubu’s nearly two-year-old administration, stressing its “decisive economic reforms” and “comprehensive security strategies” which, in his words, have addressed the root causes of insecurity in the country.
Following the APC Caucus endorsement of Tinubu for a second term, Adaramodu urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When the APC is building roads and delivering dividends of democracy to the people, we must have some time in the evening to laugh. And we are laughing at their political entertainment called coalition or merger,” he concluded.
