Fresh divisions have surfaced within the Labour Party (LP) as its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Abayomi Arabambi, has stated that former presidential candidate Peter Obi will not be the party’s flagbearer in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Lunchtime Politics,” Arabambi asserted that the LP’s 2023 momentum was driven by youth activism and the #EndSARS movement rather than any single personality.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi declared.
The statement comes in the wake of Peter Obi’s recent public support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during the August by-elections.
Although Obi clarified that his support was due to the absence of LP candidates in certain constituencies, the party leadership has reportedly dismissed his actions as “anti-party conduct.”
Arabambi further accused Obi of having “one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC,” and challenged the former Anambra State governor to formally announce his departure if he plans to align with another political platform.
This development highlights the growing tension within the Labour Party as it seeks to redefine its identity ahead of the next election cycle. While Obi remains a prominent figure in opposition politics, the party’s hierarchy appears intent on moving forward with a new strategic direction.
