The Lagos State Police Command on Friday confirmed the arrest of 18 individuals after a protest over a power outage at Tejuosho Market descended into violence.

The group, described by authorities as hoodlums and miscreants, attempted to storm a commercial bank within the market, prompting a swift police intervention.

In a statement issued on Friday by DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the command emphasized its zero-tolerance approach to attacks on law enforcement and destruction of property.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reiterates that violent attacks on police personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated. Lagosians are advised to show utmost respect to the police in their duty to protect lives and property,” the statement read.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. under the pretense of a protest against power cuts but quickly escalated as some participants turned violent, targeting both citizens and commercial properties.

Mobile police personnel stationed at the bank repelled the initial assault, preventing the mob from breaching the premises.

“Following a distress call, additional forces, including Anti-Riot Squads and tactical teams, were deployed promptly. The combined efforts of the police units successfully contained the situation, dispersed the violent crowd, and ensured the safety of the bank and its customers,” Oluseyi added.

The arrested suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify other perpetrators involved in the attack.

The police have reassured market residents that normalcy has been fully restored, urging them to continue their daily activities without fear.

The Lagos State Police also reminded the public of its recent enforcement operations, including the September 12 arrest of two suspected cultists in the Akoka area.

“Unfortunately, some individuals exploit peaceful protests to instigate violence. The police will continue to enforce the law and ensure the safety of residents and businesses,” the statement added.
