The 2024 Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games concluded in grand style, with the American University in Cairo emerging as the overall champion, securing a remarkable total of 82 medals, including 46 golds.
Co-hosts Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos secured second and third positions, amassing 84 and 98 total medals, respectively.
In the closing ceremony held on September 29, 2024, at LASU’s Main Campus in Ojo, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, Vice Chancellor of LASU, expressed pride in the institution’s successful hosting of the first international sports competition in its 42-year history.
“When the reports of the Games are completed, it will be said that LASU and UNILAG collaborated to host one of the best events so far. Looking back at our achievements, we are proud to have given Africa an exciting and entertaining African University Games,” she stated.
Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Ogunsola, emphasised the significance of camaraderie and competition among athletes, stating, “Each competition showcased extraordinary talents and determination, fostering teamwork, resilience, and respect.”
She further encouraged athletes to carry the spirit of unity back to their respective universities.
President of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), Bawa Mohammed, highlighted the record-breaking participation, noting, “This year’s edition is special as we face a global recession yet attracted more athletes than ever.”
He also announced the introduction of VAR technology for officiating, marking a milestone for African sports.
The financial investment in the games was substantial, with reports indicating that each university spent upwards of N110 million just on logistics and feeding.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, saying, “For the success of this competition, I owe my deepest gratitude to Mr. Governor for believing in this project; without you, this event would not have been possible.”
As the dust settles on this monumental event, the message of unity, excellence, and hope for the future of African sports resonates more than ever.
