Absence of Rickey Tarfa (SAN) and his counsel on Friday stalled his trial for perversion of the course of justice by offering gratification to two judges.
Tarfa is standing trial before a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square.
He is facing a 26-count charge bordering on offering monetary gratification to two judges of the Federal High Court – Justices Hyeladzira Nganjiwa and Mohammed Yunusa.
On Friday, counsel to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Suleman Mohammed, announced his appearance and informed the court that Tarfa and his counsel were absent.
He said that both were notified of the hearing date.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye adjourned the case until Jan. 28 for further hearing.
Reports state that Tarfa was not able to attend court proceedings all through 2019 due to ill-health.
His counsel, Mr Jelili Owonikoko, had applied to the court for extension of time to allow him to recuperate.
The court, however, advised Owonikoko, after several adjournments, to produce other witnesses to continue with defence to avoid stalling the trial.
Tarfa was arraigned by the EFCC on March 9, 2016 and subsequently re-arraigned on Nov. 16, 2016, on an amended charge.
The anti-graft agency claimed that from June 27, 2012 to Jan. 8, 2016, Tarfa paid a total of N5.3 million in tranches into Nganjiwa’s bank account.
The senior advocate of Nigeria was also accused of paying into Yunusa’s account, N800, 000 in three tranches between Feb. 9, 2015 and Nov. 30, 2015.
The EFCC alleged that the payments were to compromise the judges.
It also accused Tarfa of age falsification.
Tarfa, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and was granted bail on self-recognizance.
The EFCC has since closed its case.
Tarfa began defence after the court dismissed his no-case submission.
