ALGON partners EFCC on transparency and accountability

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has established a partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to provide training for its members across the nation’s 774 local government areas. This initiative will focus on enhancing understanding and practices related to procurement, financial management, due process, accountability, and transparency.

This development was announced in a communique released to the press following the 49th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the association, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday. The statement was co-signed by ALGON’s National Publicity Secretary, Bala Chamoo, and National Treasurer, Gazal Babatunde.

The communique outlined seven major resolutions adopted by the NEC, aimed at improving the association’s effectiveness in serving the Nigerian populace.

The statement highlighted the collaboration with the EFCC to improve procurement and financial practices among local government officials. Additionally, it welcomed the establishment of the Federal Government Steering Committee tasked with enforcing and implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government financial autonomy. The NEC expressed gratitude to the committee’s chairman and members and committed to advancing local government autonomy, including revising the local government framework to better address public needs.
