ALGON condemns Edo LG Chairman’s assault
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo has condemned Sunday’s assault on the Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Mr Collins Aigbogun.
The association, through its state chairman, Mr Newman Ugiagbe, described the act at Illeh in Ekpoma, as a clear violation of democratic principles and the rule of law.
Ugiagbe, while briefing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Benin on Tuesday, called for prompt investigation by security agencies, including the state Attorney-General.
He says the association longs to see the perpetrators brought to justice.
He alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was resorting to violence and intimidating tactics, including unwarranted attacks on PDP members.
“ALGON calls for swift action to prevent further harm and ensure a free and fair electoral process.
“The association stands firm in its commitment to promoting peace, democracy, and the rule of law in Edo State.
“We urge all stakeholders, political parties, and security agencies to work together to safeguard the rights and safety of all citizens,” he said.
ALGON also demanded the immediate release of Aigbogun from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Meanwhile, APC Campaigns Council Director, Prince Kassim Afegbua, expressed shock and disappointment at ALGON for not reacting to attacks on APC supporters and Edo voters.
He questioned why ALGON was now raising concerns about criminal assault when they had earlier been silent on the issue.
Afegbua stated that the APC had been raising alarm about criminal activities by some PDP stalwarts, but their cries were ignored until they petitioned the Inspector General of Police.
He described the situation in Ekpoma as a “theatre of war” with widespread intimidation, harassment, and threats.
“This is an uncivilised way to do politics,” he said.
However, while appealing for a peaceful election, he commended the security agencies for acting promptly to arrest the lawlessness.
Afegbua urged ALGON to promote peaceful elections by ensuring the electorate exercised their franchise without molestation or hindrance.
Afegbua emphasised the commitment of APC to peace and tranquillity.
