Akwa Ibom Police Commissioner orders probe into alleged brutality against students
The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, has directed a thorough investigation into allegations of police brutality and extortion raised by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
The directive was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, in Uyo.
Earlier on Monday, students staged a protest over alleged police misconduct, disrupting academic activities on campus.
To address their grievances, the Commissioner of Police engaged with the institution’s management, the Students’ Union Government (SUG), and other representatives to facilitate a peaceful dialogue.
“During the discussions, the Command reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including students,” the statement read.
The Commissioner strongly condemned any unprofessional conduct by police officers and assured that any personnel found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The police command also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies and students to ensure peace and security within the state.
