Akpabio dismisses impeachment rumours, calls reports fake news

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has firmly rejected rumours of a potential impeachment plot against him, describing the reports as “total fake news.”

Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Akpabio expressed confidence in the stability of the Senate, stating, “If they have a lot of traffic, whoever brought out this fake news must be getting a lot of payment because of the traffic going on.”

The speculation arose after reports claimed that operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) were seen at the National Assembly amidst allegations of a faction of northern senators attempting to oust him due to dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu.

In response to the security presence, Akpabio noted that it is standard practice for parliaments to maintain internal security personnel to ensure order.

He assured the public that the Senate remains stable and that impeachment discussions are unfounded.

The viral report had also claimed that DSS agents, dressed in dark suits, were strategically placed throughout the National Assembly premises.
