Airtel connects 1,200 schools, 1m African children to digital education

Airtel Africa, a leading telecomm-unications and mobile money provider across 14 African countries, has announced significant milestones in its five-year partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), aimed at transforming education across the continent.

Since the partnership’s launch in 2021, over 1,500 schools have been connected to the internet, 17,000 teachers trained, and nearly one million learners reached with quality digital education resources in 13 African countries.

The collaboration is part of Airtel Africa’s $57 million commitment to support education development and bridge the digital divide for vulnerable children, particularly in remote areas, in partnership with African governments.

The initiative prioritises the accessibility of online learning resources, including zero-rated educational platforms and teacher training, to foster equitable learning opportunities for children across Africa.

Airtel Africa CEO, Sunil Taldar, reflected on the success of the partnership during this year’s World Children’s Day, saying, “Our mission is to transform lives, and through our collaboration with UNICEF, we are witnessing the profound impact that connectivity and digital resources can have on Africa’s children and teachers. For every school we connect and every teacher we train, we are taking tangible steps toward bridging the digital divide, advancing educational equality, and securing a better future for African children.”

The partnership has expanded digital learning to 13 countries, including Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Through this initiative, Airtel Africa and UNICEF are providing children, particularly those in underserved and remote areas, with the digital tools and skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.

Airtel Africa, with its presence in 14 African countries, continues to offer a wide range of telecommunications solutions, including mobile voice, data services, and mobile money, aiming to simplify and enhance the customer experience across the continent.
