Again, PDP’s Adigun defeats APC’s Lam-Adesina in Ibadan Rep supplementary election

By Moyosore Salami, Ibadan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over the weekend, declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate, Abass Adigun popularly called  Agboworin, as the winner of Saturday re-run election in Ibadan South-East/North-East Federal Constituency of Oyo State.

Adigun, a incumbent, was declared elected after he polled 28,111 votes to win the supplementary election.

The PDP candidate won the election ahead of his closed contender, of All Progressives Congress (APC), Adedapo Lam-Adesina, a son of the late former Governor Lam Adesina.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Benjamin Olley of the University of Ibadan, announced Adigun as the winner at the Mapo Hall Collation Centre in Ibadan.

“Today, April 15, 2023. I, Prof. Benjamin Olley, hereby announce that Abass Agboworin of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declare the winner of the supplementary election into Ibadan North- East/South-East Federal Constituency of Oyo state.”

Lam-Adesina of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate, polled 27,338 votes.

It would be recalled that INEC had declared the election inconclusive in February.

Akanni Lawanson, who was the returning officer at the time, declared the election inconclusive.

He said he could not declare the winner of the election because the number of collected permanent voter cards (PVCs) in some units where elections were not held or cancelled exceeded the margin between the two leading candidates.

Lawanson had said that the margin between Adigun and Lam-Adesina was 650 votes while the PVCs in question were in excess of 1,200.

It would be recalled that the young Lam-Adesina also lost to Adigun in 2019 on the platform of  the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
