Afam Osigwe sworn in as 32nd NBA president

Afam Osigwe has officially begun his tenure as the 32nd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in a ceremony held in Lagos. Osigwe, who took the oath of office on Thursday, succeeded Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, marking the beginning of his term leading the prestigious legal organization.

Elected in July 2023, Osigwe, formerly the NBA General Secretary, won the presidential election by defeating two other candidates. He secured 50.52% of the votes, totaling 20,435, as announced by Oluseun Abimbola, Chairman of the NBA Electoral Committee. His opponents included Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the NBA Institute of Continuing Legal Education Governing Council, who received 10,998 votes (27.19%), and Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, who garnered 9,018 votes (22.29%).

In his inaugural address, Osigwe reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the NBA remains a significant advocate in Nigeria’s democratic framework. He emphasized that his administration will hold both federal and state governments accountable, uphold the rule of law, and protect the rights of Nigerians. Osigwe also conveyed his gratitude to the NBA members for their trust and pledged to work diligently for the advancement of both the association and the broader society.
