AEPB takes action on Nyanya refuse dump

By Taofeek LAWAL, Abuja

Sequel to a story run by Nigerian Nigerian NewsDirect on Thursday, March 11, 2021 with the caption, “Residents want AEPB to take urgent action, as refuse dump takes over Nyanya,” our correspondent has sighted men from the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) evacuating the refuse dump which not only poses health challenges to the residents but take over half of the road.

The men of the AEPB more than 15 in number were seen packing and emptying the refuse into four waiting refuse trucks from the road. Motorists, commuters and passers-by who had complained bitterly about the abandoned refuse were heaping praises on AEPB for taking urgent actions which bother the health of residents as well as pollution of the environment.

Respondents who had chats with our correspondent said the AEPB had done well by responding to their complaints by evacuating the refuse but added that the board need not be called upon to perform its statutory duties and must spread its tentacles around the territory every hour of the day and every day of the week.

“While we want to commend the AEPB for the prompt action it has taken to pack this refuse, we also want to add they should be alive and be alert to their full mandate of keeping Abuja clean at all times. I think it is high time for them to have a patrol vehicle or vehicles that will be moving round the city to monitor dumping refuse. With the vehicles, the board can now call on designated contractors covering certain areas of the territory to evacuate the refuse at their different jurisdiction at all times, with that we can a very clean city that can compare favourably with any city globally,” a respondent who craved anonymity told our correspondent.
