Abuja Market demolition claims 2 lives

Demolition exercise going on in Maitama Market in Kubwa, (satellite town) in Bwari Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has left two persons dead. A source told our correspondent that the two deceased were from Enugu and Kebbi States respectively.

According to an eye witness, the Development Control Department of Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, had begun demolition of the market and had observed about eight days break. He said that on Thursday, preceding the day for final demolition, traders were engaged in removing their valuables including removing zinc, wood, iron, and other things from the structures that were about to be demolished.

He further stated that the deceased that hailed from Enugu state together with other people were removing iron from lintel of a structure and unfortunately for  him, as he went into the place to pull the iron out, the walls of the building collapsed on him and the unfortunate story rent the air.

As for the deceased from Kebbi State, the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday morning prior to the final demolition of the market by the Development Control. Another wall of a building collapsed on him as he was trying to remove iron from the lintel. He died on the spot.

It was gathered that when the news filtered the whole vicinity, the military men attached to the Development Control came and drove everyperson away from the scene and the final demolition took place.

It was also gathered that the victim from Kebbi State has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Meanwhile, Bwari Area Council has issued official public announcement notifying traders that Maitama Market has been temporarily relocated to Kubwa Modern Market, Army Scheme.
