Abiodun unveils plan to revamp Olumo rock
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced his administration’s commitment to enhancing the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre.
Speaking on Wednesday during an inspection of the site, the governor revealed that his government will now prioritise tourism as a strategic initiative to harness the sector’s economic potential.
Governor Abiodun affirmed that a comprehensive plan will be developed to ensure Olumo Rock is presented in a manner befitting its cultural and historical significance.
He acknowledged that the iconic site embodies the deep heritage, traditions, and legacy of Egbaland and the state as a whole, having attracted over 20,000 visitors in 2024.
“Now, our focus has fully shifted to tourism, and we are committed to advancing the industry’s development in a structured and purposeful manner.”
“Tourism offers immense opportunities beyond revenue generation. We have seen countries whose primary economic driver is tourism. Some nations have successfully transitioned from oil dependency, with tourism now contributing over 70% of their income,” he noted.
Governor Abiodun described Olumo Rock as the state’s most prominent tourist attraction and assured that it would receive significant enhancements to position it as a prime destination for both domestic and international visitors.
He stressed the importance of a proactive approach to restoring, maintaining, and safeguarding the state’s tourist centres, warning that without proper attention, such sites could deteriorate over time.
“These heritage sites reflect our rich cultural identity, history, and traditions. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve them, as they serve as a bridge between our past and present. Long after we are gone, they will continue to tell our story and remind future generations of their roots.”
“I commend those who have diligently maintained this site. However, I believe it deserves even greater attention, and from now on, it will receive the highest level of care and investment.”
“I have noted key areas for improvement and necessary changes. Our administration has already prioritised infrastructure, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, social development, and agriculture.”
“Now, we will develop a strategic plan to ensure that Olumo Rock receives a much-needed upgrade and a distinguished transformation for the future,” he concluded.
