A foremost women leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abia State Chapter, Barrister Nnenna Obewu Onwuka has lamented the exclusion of women in the last primaries of the party where candidates were elected ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Speaking with Nigerian NewsDirect yesterday at the birthday ceremony and free medical care outreach of Barrister Randy Ukanwoke held at the Senator TA Orji’s Hall Umuahia south local government Area, Obewu said the Abia leadership should give the women the 35% affirmation mapped out for them, urging the state government to ensure that they look for elective positions for the women of Abia State in the 2023 election.
She noted that women are tired of singing, dancing and praising and receiving nothing at the end saying that women are learned and can hold elective offices and all men passed through the womb of a woman.
According to her it has been the men representing since the creation of PDP and the women are left behind, in the present house of Assembly no woman and a man is heading the committee on woman affairs, in the present local government in Abia State it is only one woman and she is doing marvelously very well, one over fifteen said it is not fair.
She pointed out that in the house of Assembly in the 2023 election in PDP those that have ticket to go to the house of Assembly twenty three of them no woman which means that women have no hope again in this party.
According to her, in Ebonyi state a woman is the deputy governorship candidate including Lagos state, Plateau state and others.
She stressed that most women are qualified, explaining that she has been a lawyer for over 30 years, a teacher and has held several positions in the state and many more women are like that but the men have been sidelining women.
She wondered why women will not be voted for and they are expected to vote for people saying that it is injustice noted that there is no man woman did not harbour and nurture in their womb, suck their breast and sit on their laps.
Barrister Onwuka further said “why should the men think that women are slaves, they are only better to wear uniforms sing and clap their hands.
“The time has come to give woman their place in the politics of Abia State noted that Abia women will no longer continue to tolerate it.”
She urged the party leaders to find an opening at the state level to put in women added that they still have the opportunity to do that if they want them to participate if not we will abandon the campaign for them.
Onwuka described politics as business and it is partnership and women have the voting capacity more than men but why is it that when it comes to sharing dividends, elective or appointive positions they will be relegated to the background that must stop she insisted.
She insisted that the “election of this year must be negotiated and there will be an agreement reached among men and women if they want us to participate else the women will leave the political terrain for them in Abia,” she added.
