Kano Gov’t to distribute N3bn for flood victims in Kano

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has finalised arrangements to begin the distribution of three billion naira (N3bn) to victims of the flood that occurred during the last rainy season in the affected areas.

He made this announcement while opening the 23rd State Executive Council Meeting at the Kano Government House on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf explained that the funds were part of the intervention provided by the Federal Government to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to address the impact of the 2024 flood disaster.

The governor further disclosed that the money had been transferred to the state treasury a few months ago in preparation for distribution to the affected victims.

He assured that the administration had ensured the funds were managed appropriately, with efforts made to accurately identify the victims who would benefit from the Federal Government’s assistance. He also emphasised that transparency, accountability, and responsiveness would guide the distribution process.

“Now that we are ready, we have all the lists of the victims, and we know how much each victim will receive. The distribution will commence soon,” the governor stated.

Governor Yusuf also revealed that both a main and sub-committee had been established for the disbursement of the funds. These committees will visit all 44 local government areas of the state to distribute the funds to the rightful beneficiaries.

It is worth noting that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), with support from international donor organisations, have already identified the areas and individuals most affected by the flooding in Kano State.
