Monaco’s Singo apologises after injuring Donnarumma

Monaco’s Wilfried Singo has issued an apology to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after the Italian goalkeeper sustained a serious facial injury during a Ligue 1 match.

The injury occurred in the first half of PSG’s 4-2 win over Monaco on Wednesday. Donnarumma required 10 staples to treat lacerations to the right side of his face after being caught by Singo’s studs during a collision.

“I’d like to apologise to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face,” Singo wrote on Instagram. He added a personal message to the goalkeeper: “I wish you a good recovery.”

Donnarumma was unable to continue after the challenge and was replaced by Matvey Safonov. A statement from PSG revealed that the goalkeeper would undergo further medical examinations and would remain inactive for several days.

Footage shared by PSG after the match showed Singo and Donnarumma greeting each other on the pitch, with Donnarumma reassuring the Ivorian defender: “Everything’s fine, no worries.” Despite Singo already being on a yellow card, the referee did not issue a red card, considering the challenge to be part of the action, according to PSG captain Marquinhos.

Monaco later announced that Singo had been subjected to racist abuse on social media following the incident. The club condemned the behaviour in the strongest terms, stating: “Monaco condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the unacceptable racist comments made about Wilfried Singo on social media after the match.”

The club added: “Such behaviour has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch, and is totally at odds with the values that the club stands for.”
