Zamfara Hisbah clashes with Police over alleged immoral activities
Operatives of the Zamfara State Hisbah Commission have clashed with police officers in Gusau over allegations of immoral conduct involving women in hotels.
The confrontation occurred on Monday after Hisbah operatives apprehended police officers who were allegedly found with women at a hotel, in violation of the state’s strict Sharia laws.
Speaking on the incident, Sheikh Umar Hassan Gusau, the Executive Chairman of the Zamfara State Hisbah Commission, through his Director of Operations, Lawal Abubakar Maradun, stated that the police had been repeatedly warned against such conduct but had failed to comply.
“We have advised them several times to desist from these acts, but they persist,” Maradun said.
The incident reportedly began when Hisbah operatives arrested some police officers who were in the company of women at a hotel. When confronted, the women reportedly failed to identify themselves, while the police officers identified themselves as law enforcement officials. This led to a standoff between the two security agencies.
Maradun emphasised the inconsistency of police officers, who were meant to uphold the law but were instead breaking it.
”These officers are supposed to enforce the law, yet they are lawbreakers themselves,” he lamented.
He further explained that women caught in such circumstances would be arrested for prostitution, warned, and, if reoffending, prosecuted.
The matter was escalated to the State Police Headquarters, where Police Commissioner Muhammad Dalija expressed disappointment over the actions of his men. He condemned their immoral conduct and issued a stern warning against such behavior in the future.
Maradun also noted that no senior officers were involved in the clash, as only junior security personnel were arrested in connection with the incident.
