NEMA hosts children’s educational excursion to raise awareness on disaster management

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) recently hosted a group of children, aged 9 to 12, in an educational excursion aimed at raising awareness about disaster management.

The event, which took place at NEMA’s headquarters in Abuja, was organised by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as part of the “Kiddies World” television programme, set to air on NTA’s network services.

During the visit, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, praised the children’s enthusiasm and interest in disaster management, emphasising the importance of introducing the younger generation to the field of disaster preparedness and response.

“I commend you, the young generation, for showing interest in disaster management. It is important for you to learn how disasters can be prevented, how to mitigate their impacts, and how to respond effectively when they occur. I encourage you to take this opportunity seriously and continue learning about these important aspects of life and safety,” said Mrs. Umar.

The children were given an in-depth tour of NEMA’s facilities, with Mrs. Umar providing insights into the agency’s founding, structure, and operations. She explained the vital role NEMA plays in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across Nigeria.

The visit included interactive sessions where the children were encouraged to ask questions about disaster management. The NEMA team responded with detailed explanations, helping the children better understand the complexities involved in disaster response.

In addition to the discussions, the children participated in hands-on activities such as mini lectures on disaster management, basic first aid training, and learning about the importance of safety during emergencies.

The group also visited NEMA’s Geo-spatial Centre and observed the operation of mobile ambulances and water purifiers used in disaster relief efforts.

One of the highlights of the excursion was a demonstration of search and rescue equipment.

Assistant Chief Search and Rescue Officer at NEMA, Mr. Michael Agbo, showed the children how rescue operations are conducted during emergencies, providing them with practical knowledge on the tools and techniques used in disaster scenarios.

Responding on behalf of the children, Mrs. Cynthia Ngozi Opene, the producer of NTA’s Kiddies World, expressed her gratitude to NEMA for hosting the event.

She thanked the agency for providing the children with an enriching experience that would help them understand the importance of disaster management in safeguarding lives and property.

Mrs. Umar also presented souvenirs to the children, including Miss Oguntayo Olamiposi, the presenter of Kiddies World, as a gesture of appreciation for their interest in disaster management.
