National Grid disturbance triggers power outages, as TCN launches major repair, stability efforts

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that the national grid experienced a significant disturbance this morning at approximately 11:29 AM, due to a sudden frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.
In a statement made available by the TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah read that “the incident, which led to power outages across parts of the country, was caused by an issue at one of TCN’s substations, prompting an immediate shutdown to prevent further complications.
Recovery efforts were swiftly initiated, with power restoration in the Abuja area occurring shortly after the disturbance. Restoration in other affected areas is ongoing as TCN works to stabilise the grid.
In addition to the incident, TCN revealed ongoing repair work on critical sections of its transmission network. These efforts include the restoration of the 330kV Shiroro–Mando line, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and work on the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line.
These improvements are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the grid, following findings from a recent investigative report on previous grid failures.
TCN’s efforts are geared toward addressing weaknesses identified in the transmission infrastructure.
The company is implementing both technical upgrades and strategic interventions to prevent further disruptions, yet warns that some instability may persist while repairs are underway.
“We understand the impact of these interruptions on the public and ask for their patience as we work through these necessary upgrades.”
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to stabilising Nigeria’s power supply as part of the country’s broader socio-economic goals, aiming to deliver a more resilient and reliable electricity grid in the near future.
