Power outage: Kano Speaker calls for immediate action, advocates adoption of renewable energy

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

Rt Hon Jibril Ismail Falgore, the Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, has raised significant concerns regarding the unreliability of power systems affecting nine Northern States calling for immediate action to resolve the issue.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, Falgore expressed deep dismay over the recurrent power outages and stressed the urgent need for authorities to address the issue promptly.

The Lawmaker noted that the lingering outage has severe impact on socio-economic development in the affected states and the nation at large.

He further underscored the importance of exploring alternative energy sources to alleviate the strain on the national grid and mitigate the negative consequences of these outages, which have resulted in widespread power blackouts and adversely impacted businesses across the Northern region.

He emphasized that a well-managed system is crucial to prevent frequent collapses in the future.

The Speaker also called upon the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other relevant stakeholders to take immediate action.

He proposed a shift towards renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power that can operate independently of the national grid, suggesting this as a sustainable solution to the current challenges.

Falgore also urged the Federal Government to consider approving constitutional amendments that would empower state governments to generate and transmit their electricity independently.

However, Falgore appealed to the authorities to swiftly repair the vandalized facilities to restore power supply to the affected states, underscoring the critical importance of addressing this issue promptly.
