Oyo Govt. restates commitment to promotion, preservation of local tradition, culture

Oyo State Government on Monday in Ibadan reiterated its commitment to the promotion and preservation of local tradition and culture.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, gave the commitment while briefing journalists on the state government’s plans to celebrate the annual Yemoja festival.

Olatunbosun said Gov. Seyi Makinde’s administration gave priority to the development of the culture and tourism sector as another means of enhancing the socio-economic growth of the state.

He said the 2024 Yemoja festival will hold from Thursday to Oct. 27 at Popoyemoja in Ibadan.

“The annual festival honours the Yemoja deity which symbolises motherhood and fertility.

“The festival serves as a crucial cultural event for the Yoruba people.

“The festival is not just a celebration, it is an opportunity to showcase our rich heritage and strengthen our economy through cultural tourism,” the Commissioner said.

He said the festival would draw participants from across Yoruba-speaking states and the diaspora, and thus promote cultural exchange and unity among communities.

“This festival will feature a variety of activities, including traditional rites, cultural performances and community gatherings,” Olatunbosun said.
