Lagos Govt launches major clearance at Daleko Market

The Lagos State Government has initiated a significant clearance operation at Daleko Market in Mushin, focusing on the removal of shanties and makeshift structures that are obstructing drainage systems and encroaching on roadways.

The operation, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) on Monday, aims to address illegal constructions that have led to blocked waterways and increased traffic congestion in the area.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the operation via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, sharing footage of the ongoing efforts.

“Clearance operations ongoing at Daleko Market, Mushin to remove shanties and makeshift structures built on drainage and the road,” Wahab stated, emphasising the necessity of this action for proper drainage, especially during the rainy season.

This initiative is part of a broader campaign by the Lagos State Government to eliminate illegal structures throughout the city, enhancing public order and urban aesthetics.

Recent operations have targeted multiple locations, including Surulere and Ikoyi, as part of the city’s strategy to maintain a clean and safe environment.

Also, the government plans to collaborate with private sector partners to revitalise areas prone to illegal encroachment, converting them into community-friendly spaces.

A notable project includes transforming the cleared Ijora underbridge area into a recreational facility, demonstrating a commitment to urban development and improved living conditions for Lagos residents.
