Anambra: Two police officers killed in gunfight with armed assailants

Two police officers from the Anambra State Command have tragically lost their lives at the hands of armed assailants.

The incident occurred in Nnewi during an intense gunfight on Thursday morning.

Reports indicate that the operatives were engaged in a shootout when the attackers deployed an improvised explosive device (IED) aimed at their vehicle, leading to a deadly explosion that resulted in the officers’ deaths.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident through a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. He stated that a manhunt for the perpetrators is currently underway.

“The Joint Security Force has launched an operation to track down the armed individuals responsible for this heinous act,” Ikenga reported, referring to the attack on the police operatives during their investigation in Uruagu, Nnewi North.

According to preliminary accounts, the armed group opened fire upon noticing the police officers and subsequently hurled an explosive into their operational vehicle.

“Sadly, two operatives made the ultimate sacrifice, and their vehicle was engulfed in flames,” he added.

In light of this incident, the police command has urged the public to assist in their efforts. “We call on anyone who witnessed the attack or has information to come forward and aid our operations,” Ikenga emphasised.
