Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu has convicted Okwudili Joseph for internet fraud. Joseph was charged with impersonation and cybercrime by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The statement was made known on Tuesday via the official X, formerly Twitter, account of the EFCC.

The charge stated that Joseph, on June 5, 2024, in Enugu, fraudulently impersonated Jim Warren, a gas detection specialist from the United States, with the intent to gain advantage for himself.

This action was deemed a violation of Section 22 (3) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and punishable under Section 22 (4) of the same Act.

Upon being read the charge, Joseph pleaded “guilty.” Prosecution counsel Mohammed Shehu reviewed the case’s facts and requested a conviction and sentence.

In contrast, defence counsel G. C. Ugwele asked the court to show leniency, citing Joseph’s remorse and learned a lesson.

Justice Umar considered both arguments and sentenced Joseph to two years in prison with hard labour or a fine of N200,000.00. Joseph’s legal troubles began with his arrest on June 5, 2024, in Nike, Enugu, following credible information linking him to fraudulent activities.

During his arrest, Joseph admitted to the crime and provided confessional statements.
