Gunmen abduct Babcock university staff in Ogun

On Thursday, an assistant Chief Nursing Officer from Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo, Mrs. Elizabeth Uruakpa, was abducted by unidentified gunmen.

The 66-year-old Uruakpa was returning from an evening church service when the assailants, who had been lying in wait, seized her at the entrance of her residence near the new Ilisan market. The sudden abduction caused widespread panic in the neighborhood, with many residents and shopkeepers hastily securing their premises.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the incident, saying, “The woman was on her way back from church around 7 pm when the gunmen captured her. She is well-known in the community as a senior nurse at Babcock University Teaching Hospital and a member of Winners’ Chapel. They forcibly pulled her from her vehicle, placed her in their red Toyota car, and drove off. This kind of violent act is unprecedented in our area and is deeply unsettling.”

Dr. Joshua Suleiman, the Director of Communication and Marketing at Babcock University, confirmed the disturbing news on Friday. He said, “I was informed about the incident last night. It has been reported on one of our university platforms, but I do not have detailed information yet. We are working on gathering more details and will provide an update as soon as possible.”

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, also verified the incident via her X account, noting, “On September 5, a distress call was received from Ilisan near the new market at around 5:10 pm reporting that Elizabeth Uruakpa was abducted by armed men who blocked her Honda CRV with their unregistered red Toyota Camry and then fled with her. Further updates will follow.”

This incident follows the tragic killing of Professor Yinka Olomojobi, a lecturer at Babcock University, who was shot dead by kidnappers on April 19, 2024, at the Ajadeh Event Centre, Iperu/Sagamu Road, Iperu Remo, while resisting his abduction.
