Amidst severe security challenges in Sokoto State, Governor Ahmad Aliyu has awarded a contract worth N1.2 billion for the repair of 25 boreholes. In addition, he has sanctioned the construction of the Lugu Dam, a project estimated to cost N33 billion.
The information was made by the governor who communicated these developments to residents in Hausa. He stated, “We have awarded a contract for the repair of 25 boreholes at a cost of N1.2 billion. Additionally, we have approved the construction of the Lugu Dam, which will require N33 billion.”
Sokoto, like many states in the Northwest, has been heavily affected by banditry, reflecting widespread insecurity and poverty in the region.
In response to the escalating security threats, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has ordered the Chief of Defence Staff and other senior military officials to relocate to Sokoto State. This strategic move is intended to enhance the government’s counter-insurgency efforts in the region.
The Ministry of Defence, through spokesperson Henshaw Ogubike, emphasized that this relocation highlights the government’s determination to address these security threats. This decision follows public outcry over a viral video showing bandits celebrating after capturing a Nigerian military armored vehicle.
Matawalle assured that during their stay in the Northwest, military officials will oversee operations targeting notorious terrorists such as Bello Turji and his gang. He affirmed the government’s commitment to using all available resources to restore peace and security. Matawalle also encouraged residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states to remain vigilant and collaborate with security forces, underscoring the government’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
