Tension as Nigerian Police Detain Lesbian and Four Others
Peace Emovon endured a distressing ordeal of unjust persecution when the Nigeria Police detained her and four others on allegations of Homosexualism. The injustice of the situation became apparent when Peace, who had gone to her local police station in Edo state to report her partner, Tokoni Gladys Amaran, for transmitting Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) to her, found herself detained instead.
Emovon was deeply upset by the situation. Upon learning that her partner, Tokoni Amaran, had knowingly infected her with HIV/AIDS without disclosing his health status during their relationship, she decided to take the matter to the police. Adding insult to injury, Amaran ended their relationship and moved on to another partner.
Further investigation by the police revealed that Emovon and Amaran had been in a relationship since their secondary school years at Lydia Group of School in Benin City. Although they had broken up at one point, they rekindled their relationship a few years ago. Emovon, Amaran’s partner, mentioned that despite her consistent use of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) medication, she had never disclosed her actual medical condition to her, despite engaging in unprotected sex.
During a conversation with reporters, Emovon conveyed a deep feeling of betrayal and hurt after learning that her partner had kept her health condition hidden while she consistently took PREP medications. Emovon mentioned that despite providing her medical report to Amaran, the partner continued to deny being accountable for her condition.
The escalating conflict culminated in the dissolution of their relationship, leaving Emovon feeling used and dismissed. Her surprise turned to dismay when Amaran initiated a new relationship with Esther Aigbedo, seemingly unconcerned about any potential consequences for Emovon’s health. Emovon suspects that Amaran may have infected her and is worried about the possibility of transmitting the infection to others.
In response to Emovon’s complaints, the police summoned Tokoni Amaran for questioning before searching her residence in Lagos. Amaran was reported to have fled, and her new partner, Aigbedo Esther, was taken into custody. The police, who are investigating the allegations, also apprehended four others for participating in same-sex activities. Emovon assists the police and provides relevant information while in custody to help uncover the truth.
In the interim, a medical examination was conducted on the arrested individuals, including Tokoni’s new partner, Esther. The results revealed that Esther Aigbedo tested positive for HIV and another condition. Furthermore, her ex-partner has provided the police with information about the whereabouts of Amaran’s son, Adelowo Olamiposi Oyewole, and has emphasized the need for him to undergo an examination to determine his current health status. This case not only involves legal matters but also has potential public health implications. It raises concerns about HIV transmission, the importance of comprehensive testing and treatment, and the need for public health interventions to prevent the spread of HIV.
Upon conducting an additional inquiry, Tokoni Amaran’s legal representative produced a letter of invitation from the police, which was issued on 26 June 2024 and sent to their client. The lawyer has chosen not to disclose Tokoni’s current whereabouts but has emphasized that she is vulnerable. Additionally, the lawyer has disclosed that Tokoni was purportedly a victim of sexual assault by a military officer at a young age and that this incident was widely known and reported to the police. Regrettably, no action was taken before the officer succumbed to an illness, a traumatic experience that has left Tokoni in a profound state of emotional turmoil.
The lawyer further argued that this is a significant legal matter that should be brought before the Court. He emphasized that there is no basis for attributing the transmission of the disease to Tokoni Amaran. The case involves complex legal issues such as personal responsibility for health, privacy rights, and the legal treatment of HIV/AIDS. These issues will be thoroughly examined and discussed during the legal process.
Furthermore, the lawyer mentioned that he plans to contact his client to address the serious allegations made by her friend Peace Emovon regarding her sexual orientation and her friend’s claim of being infected by AIDS. He is committed to ensuring a fair and thorough legal process, which will involve a series of legal steps, including a thorough investigation, witness testimonies, and a possible trial, to determine the truth of the allegations.
The authorities have issued a warrant for Amaran’s arrest. She is being search for by the police and she is known to be originally from Bayelsa, specifically the Kolokuma/Opukuma Local Government Area.
