Oct 1: Another nationwide protest imminent, as organisers issue 17-point demand

Another nationwide protest looms on the occasion of the country’s Independence Day as organisers of the #Endbadgovernance protest are set to hold another demonstration.

Recall that the protesters had earlier in July embarked on a nationwide protest on the backdrop of hardship and harsh economic realities facing the citizenry.

Ahead of their planned demonstrations on October 1, 2024, the protesters have made 17 demands.

The demands include the immediate and unconditional release of detained protesters, the unfreezing of their assets, and compensation for the distress and hardships endured during peaceful demonstrations.

The movement also calls for the removal and prosecution of government officials accused of suppressing protests and violating human rights.

One of the organisers, Omoyele Sowore, released a list on Tuesday that seeks the scrapping of the 1999 Constitution, its replacement with a people-made constitution, and the restructuring of Nigeria to accommodate its diversity.

Other demands include: “Pay Nigerian workers a minimum wage of no less than N250,000 monthly.

“Invest heavily in education and provide Nigerian students with grants, not loans. Aggressively pursue free and compulsory education for children across Nigeria.

“Release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally and demilitarize the South-East. All #ENDSARS and political detainees must also be released and compensated, among other demands.”
