Land dispute spirals into violence in Obagie Nevbuosa, as Osabuogbe cries out for protection

By our reporter

A violent land dispute is escalating in Obagie Nevbuosa, a community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, marked by a dangerous blend of conspiracy, intimidation, and criminal tactics against Ebuwa Osabuogbe, a community executive member.

Ebuwa Osabuogbe has publicly accused local figures of a coordinated effort to remove him from his role and seize control of community land resources.

On February 15, 2024, he filed a sworn affidavit at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Adesuwa Road, Benin City. The affidavit alleges that Emmanuel Aigbedo, Uyi Igiebor, Osakpamwan Idemudia, and Eghosa Oghadomwangbe have conspired to illegally strip him of his position. It describes how Uyi Igiebor and his associates resorted to violence and threats against Osabuogbe, who now seeks protection from authorities due to fears for his safety.

The affidavit also recounts a community in chaos. On November 4, 2023, an ambush attributed to Uyi’s faction resulted in gunshot wounds for two men, Festus Osaretin and another individual known only as Rale.

On November 10, 2023, Osabuogbe’s home was attacked; his property was destroyed, his wife and child were displaced, and his vehicle was set on fire in what he describes as a campaign of terror.

In this series of violent events, Odion Igbinadolor, a supporter of Osabuogbe, was also shot and remains in critical condition at a Benin City hospital.

As the police continue their investigation, tensions in Obagie Nevbuosa remain high, with growing concerns that the struggle for control could further escalate if prompt action is not taken.
