By our reporter

An activist from Emuhun Community, Uhunwode local government area ward 10, unity 5, Edo State, Nicholas Nice Enaruna, has fled the country to Germany, seeking asylum after facing severe political persecution and police brutality in Nigeria.

The activist’s journey into political activism began when he could no longer stay silent in the face of widespread police brutality and injustice.

Nicholas Nice Enaruna rose to prominence as a youth leader, actively participating in negotiations organised by his party at both the local and national levels. His involvement in speeches and rallies soon attracted the attention of local authorities.

His troubles began in January 2023, during the presidential election won by Bola Tinubu, when he was arrested alongside other party members.

The arrest occurred at a rally protesting the government’s refusal to authorise their meetings. The police forcefully dispersed the demonstrators, leading to the arrest of over fifty people, including the activist. Although many were released without charges after two days, the activist continued to face harassment, intimidation, and threats.

In 2024, the situation escalated when a soldier was sent to confront him, resulting in a life-threatening altercation. The activist, who had already witnessed his father’s assassination due to their political activities, feared for his life and fled Nigeria, seeking refuge in Germany.

Now in Germany, he is pleading for protection, unable to return to Nigeria due to the ongoing threats against his life. His story sheds light on the challenges faced by political activists in Nigeria, highlighting the severe risks they endure in their fight for justice.
