Beware of pension fraudsters — Lagos Commissioner warns retirees

By Sodiq Adelakun

The Lagos State Government has warned intending retirees from the public service to be cautious of fraudsters who may attempt to deceive them into squandering their pensions.

This warning was given by the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, at the 26th retirement documentation seminars organised by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) in Alausa, Ikeja.

Addressing hundreds of intending retirees, Ayantayo advised them to seek advice from competent and reliable sources before investing their life savings.

He emphasised the importance of being vigilant and cautious in dealing with unsolicited investment offers, especially during this critical phase of their lives.

Ayantayo said the government is committed to maintaining its leadership in the Nigerian Pension Industry by striving to pay retirees’ pensions promptly upon their disengagement from the Public Service.

This dedication demonstrates the government’s unwavering support for its retirees, ensuring a secure and comfortable post-service life.

“In line with Mr. Governor’s goal, the Lagos State Pension Commission has organised today’s Retirement Documentation Seminar to prepare all prospective retirees for the imminent retirement process to ensure the prompt payment of your benefits.

“With retirement approaching, please ensure all pertinent documentation has been submitted by your MDAs, and your personnel files are accurate, as addressing these matters post-retirement may prove challenging,” he said.

The Secretary of the Lagos Staff Housing Board, Abdulrafiu Fashola, emphasised the importance of retirement planning, urging participants to expedite the process of securing their benefits.

He highlighted the valuable contributions of retirees to the success of Lagos State and encouraged active employees to learn from their experiences.

Director-General of LASPEC,  Babalola Obilana, emphasised the significance of retirement as a new chapter in life, offering valuable resources and expert guidance on financial planning and legal considerations during a seminar for intending retirees.

Obilana emphasised the importance of meticulous pre-retirement planning to ensure a fulfilling retirement journey.
