Police recover AK-47 rifles from insurgents in Anambra, injure one

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recovered AK-47 rifles from insurgents in Anambra after a shootout.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi made this known on Tuesday.

According to him, “In the early hours of today, Tuesday 12th March 2024, Police at Nnobi, Idemili South LGA, Anambra State, while on patrol with Vigilante men in Awka Etiti engaged insurgents operating with a Toyota Highlander in a shootout.

“One of the insurgents was arrested with gunshot injuries.

“Four AK-47 Rifles and 219 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered,” he stated.

Similarly, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun as part of measures to tighten security in the country has announced the immediate deployment of a full armed and ready unit of mobile policemen to the Kuriga Community to enhance security in the affected area and facilitate swift action towards the rescue operation.

The IGP made this known on Tuesday when he paid a working visit to Kaduna state following the abduction of school students in Kaduna.

Egbetokun along with the DIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Department, Habu Sani, psc, DIG Department of Operations Ede Ayuba Ekpeji, psc(+), AIG Police Mobile Force Yekini Adio Ayoku, mni, and other senior officers undertook a visit to the state to assess the situation firsthand.

During his visit, the IGP met with the Governor and extended heartfelt sympathies to the people of Kaduna State, particularly the Kuriga community affected by this tragic incident.

The IGP also noted that the Police is committed to ensuring the safe rescue of all the abducted students assuring that both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches are being vigorously pursued to secure the release of the students and bring the perpetrators to justice.
