Man, 63, faces charges for defrauding property owner of N10m in Lagos

A 63-year-old man named George Dureke has been brought before the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of fraudulently obtaining N10 million from the owner of a building site in Banana Island, Lagos State.
Dureke, who works as an engineer and resides at 10 Imagbo Street in Ikeja, is facing prosecution for two counts of obtaining by false pretense and stealing.
According to the prosecution, led by ASP Raji Akeem, the defendant allegedly committed these offenses between September 20 and September 21, 2023, at 6 Alhaji Alli Lane on Ogba Road in Agege, Lagos.
The Prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem told the court that the defendant committed the offences between Sept. 20 and Sept. 21, 2023, at 6, Alhaji Alli Lane, Ogba road, Agege, Lagos.
Akeem said that the defendant obtained N10million from one Mr Adebayo Ojo-Awo on the pretext of assìsting him construct a retractable Pergola roof at his site at Banana Island, Lagos.
The prosecutor said that the defendant, however, failed to deliver on the job as agreed and didn’t refund the money either.
Akeem said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1million and with two sureties in like sum.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case until March 25 for mention.
