In a recent development, a 43-year-old man named Martins Olanrewaju has been handed an 18-month prison sentence by the Yaba Magistrates’ Court. Olanrewaju was found guilty of stealing a sum of N820,000 belonging to his landlady’s brother.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A. O. Salawu, has also mandated the convict to reimburse the full amount to the rightful owner.

“Based on the facts of this case, confirmed reports and the plea for leniency, I hereby sentence you to 18 months in prison,’’ she said.

It was gathered that the convict, a resident of No. 3, Aliu St., Agbowa- Ikosi, Lagos State, was arraigned on Dec. 7, 2023, on a charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Godwin Oriabure, told the court that Olanrewaju committed the offence in October 2022 at Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Oriabure said that the convict stole the money from his landlady’s brother, Mr Samson Adeyemo.

The prosecutor said that the landlady had given the convict the details of his brother’s bank account to help him to reactivate it.

“After the defendant reactivated the account, he transferred the N820,000 from the account.

“It was later discovered that the defendant was the one who stole the money,” the prosecutor said.

He said that the convict later admitted to have committed the crime but all efforts to retrieve the money proved abortive.

The prosecutor noted that stealing contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
