Ogun Polytechnic students protest against killings, rapes by robbers, cultists

On Tuesday, students from Gateway Polytechnic in Saapade, Ogun State, staged a protest against the recent attacks on their off-campus hostels by armed individuals believed to be robbers and cultists.

The students gathered at the campus in the morning, carrying placards with different messages.

Several students, who preferred to remain anonymous for safety concerns, informed journalists that at least two students have lost their lives in the past few days.

According to these students, the armed individuals typically raid the hostels at night, robbing the students of their phones, money, and other personal belongings.

“They raped some girls and even beat them on Sunday. We can no longer sleep with eyes closed. These criminals will come to take our belongings and even force themselves on girls. It is getting too much. This must not continue,” they chanted.

In images shared on social media, a body of a murdered student was seen on the floor while four others with injuries were being attended to in a place that looks like a hospital.

At the moment, students are returning to their families until the situation is addressed.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed to our correspondent that “the Area Commander is on ground there.”

Asked to speak further about the agitations of the students, the PPRO said she would get the details and revert.
