Man, 65, bags double life sentence for sexually assaulting children

By Emmanuel Okin

A 65-year-old man, Igwe Ambrose, has been sentenced to double life imprisonment by the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for sexually assaulting two children aged seven and eleven.

Ambrose was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child.Justice Abiola Soladoye, who presided over the case, stated that the prosecution had provided enough evidence to prove Ambrose’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

She described the defendant as a depraved individual who took advantage of his position as a landlord to molest the children. According to Soladoye, Ambrose had offered to help the children with their schoolwork but instead used the opportunity to touch them inappropriately.

She further stated that the defendant had been positively identified by the survivors and that his testimony was unreliable and dishonest.

The judge’s verdict sends a strong message to perpetrators of sexual assault and abuse that such heinous acts will not be tolerated in society. It also serves as a reminder that justice will be served to those who violate the rights of children and vulnerable individuals.

“The children decided to open up to their mother, who then informed her husband; he thereafter confronted the defendant and the matter was reported to a police station.

“The police visited the scene and the defendant was invited to the police station where he denied the allegations against him.”

The judge, therefore, found the defendant guilty of all four counts against him, which were brought against him in violation of Sections 135 and 261 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Laws.

Mrs. Olufunke Adegoke, the State Counsel, called four witnesses: the mother of the survivors, the IPO, who submitted five exhibits, and two survivors.

According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the charges at Shagari Estate in Ipaja, Lagos, between January and June of 2021.
